I founded Archipelago as a nonprofit so that we could follow our instincts to bring out books that felt necessary and groundbreaking without being swayed by the bottom line. This means that we often acquire work without translation support in place from ministries of culture or cultural institutions. In recent years, we have acquired literary works from Kashmir, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Iraqi Kurdistan, Peru, Angola, Mozambique, Rwanda, among other parts of the world.
We consider each of our 230 titles a contemporary classic that deserves a long life. It is essential to us to keep the books we publish available to readers in elegant, environmentally kind editions. Still, it is a Herculean task to keep these literary gems in print when they do sell through their initial printings. The current economic climate and supply-chain realities continue to drive up printing costs and we are seeking new ways to fund some of our new titles and to keep all of our books in print.

A contribution of any amount will directly support the production costs of a crucial reprint or will go straight into the translation and production costs of vital new work.
