About

Archipelago Books is a nonprofit press committed to publishing exceptional translations of classic and contemporary world literature. In our first twenty years, we have brought out 250 classic and contemporary works from more than 40 languages and have hosted at least 650 literary events across the country.

We seek out vital works from diverse perspectives and literary traditions and present them in elegant editions. We feature groundbreaking voices, often from the margins, that otherwise might not be heard.

Elsewhere Editions, our blossoming children’s imprint founded in 2017, is taking on an exciting life of its own alongside our adult list. Each Elsewhere picture book is a world unto itself that we believe will inspire all readers. The illustrations across our site are created by artist Gracey Zhang.

Translation Matters

Archipelago is always striving to find visionary international writers whom American readers might not otherwise encounter. We hope our translations will increase cross-pollination between readers, writers, thinkers, and educators across borders. You can browse some of our recent acquisitons and forthcoming projects here.

Essential Encounters

Archipelago partners with like-minded organizations both in the United States and abroad – local independent bookstores, community centers, literary and arts organizations, universities, foreign institutions and embassies, and reading series across the country – to host a wide array of literary events, including interviews, discussions, and readings.

“Archipelago Books continues for me to be among the very best of international publishers, with a unique list, perfect curation, wonderful design, and a profoundly literary mission. I read their books in a state of delight and admiration, year in and year out. We are so lucky that their vital, important project continues to thrive and grow.” – Rick Moody
