Join Jennifer Shyue, translator of Augusto Higa Oshiro’s novella The Enlightenment of Katzuo Nakamatsu as she speaks with fellow translator Michelle Har Kim in a virtual conversation coordinated by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. Jennifer and Michelle will be joined by moderator Lisa Hofmann-Kuroda to discuss their recent translations of two Peruvian writers.

Jennifer Shyueย is a translator from Spanish. Her work has appeared most recently in Lit Hub,ย Oversound, andย Poetry Dailyย and has received support from Cornell Universityโs Institute for Comparative Modernities, the Fulbright Program, the National Endowment for the Arts, Princeton University, and the University of Iowa. Her translations include Julia Wong Kcomtโs chapbookย Vice-royal-tiesย (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2021) and Augusto Higa Oshiroโs novelย The Enlightenment of Katzuo Nakamatsuย (Archipelago Books, 2023).
Michelle Har Kimย is an editor and indexer of academic manuscripts, and a previous NEA Translation Fellow. Her translations of Josรฉ Watanabeโs poems appear in Guernica, Shenandoah, Epiphany, and the Asian American Literary Review. Michelle was born and raised in Manhattan.
Lisa Hofmann-Kurodaย is a Japanese to English literary translator based in New York City. Born in Tokyo, raised in Texas, she received her B.A. from Wesleyan University and her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. Her work has appeared in LitHub, Guernica, and The Baffler among other places. With Allison Markin Powell, she is the co-translator of Ryunosuke Akutagawaโsย KAPPAย (New Directions, 2023).
