A Celebration of WHALE with Cheon Myeong-kwan and Adam Levy at Clio’s

Join us for a celebration of Whale at Clio’s in Oakland! Cheon Myeong-kwan will be reading from his International Booker Prize-shortlisted novel Whale, translated from the Korean by Chi-Young Kim, and speaking with Adam Levy of Transit Books about the novel. Whale is a sprawling adventure-satire following the lives of three women, set in a remote village in South Korea. The event will take place at Clio’s on the corner of Perkins Street and Grand Avenue, in Oakland, California on Tuesday, June 6th at 7 pm PST. Please arrive at 6:30 to relax and select your spot. Light refreshments will be served, and you are welcome to bring your own snacks.
Cheon Myeong-kwan is a South Korean novelist, screenwriter, and director. Whale, his debut novel, was published in 2004 and was the winner of the 10th Munhakdongne Award. The novel has since become a contemporary classic in South Korea. His work has been translated into Chinese, English, French, Japanese, Thai, Turkish, Russian, and Vietnamese.
Adam Levy is the co-founder and publisher, with Ashley Nelson Levy, at Oakland-based non-profit press Transit Books, established in 2015. The press publishes American and international literature spanning literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, essay, and children’s literature. Levy is also a translator from Hungarian.
