SUMMARY:Acrobat Poetry Reading with Nandana Dev Sen
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person reading from Nandana Dev Sen’s translation of her mother Nabaneeta Dev Sen’s poems\, collected in Acrobat. The reading will take place outside Word Up Community Bookshop on Saturday October 9th at 4pm. Memphis Washington and Nandana Dev Sen will discuss the book\, followed by a Q&A with Dev Sen and Magdalena Hernandez. \nGloria Steinem writes of Acrobat\, “Poetry and music are both languages of the heart\, so it is a special gift when a great poet of the world is finally well-translated. Here\, the legendary Bengali poet\, Nabaneeta Dev Sen\, is re-birthed in English by her daughter\, Nandana Dev Sen. I believe that Acrobat is a book that will rescue us and be loved around the world.” \nNandana Dev Sen is a writer\, actor\, and child-rights activist. She has written six children’s books (translated into more than 15 languages globally)\, and starred in 20 feature films (from four continents\, in numerous languages). She has represented UNICEF\, RAHI and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to fight against child abuse\, and to end human trafficking. Winner of the Last Girl Champion Award (and multiple Best Actress Awards)\, Nandana is Child Protection Ambassador for Save the Children India. Nandana is on Facebook\, Instagram\, and Twitter (all three at Nandana Dev Sen). For news and updates\, please swing by nandanadevsen.com. \nLearn more about the event here. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Maureen Shaughnessy at Word Up Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Maureen Shaughnessy discusses her latest translation\, The Scent of Buenos Aires by Hebe Uhart. \n  \nMaureen Shaughnessy’s translations have been published by World Literature Today\, Words Without Borders\, Asymptote and The Antioch Review. Her translation of Hebe Uhart’s selected stories\, The Scent of Buenos Aires\, is forthcoming from Archipelago Books in October 2019. She lives in Bariloche\, Argentina. \nHebe Uhart’s stories sneak up on you. Refreshingly approachable\, they are punctuated by street talk and saturated with a cryptic wit that recalls Lydia Davis. In The Scent of Buenos Aires\, Uhart renders moments at the zoo\, the hair salon\, or a homeowners association meeting with delightfully eccentric insight. These stories cast an unusual\, intimate light on the inner lives of plants\, animals\, and humans\, magnifying the minute\, everyday quirks of Argentina’s small towns: a cat curls around his owner to humor him\, a classroom of children sway like trees when their teacher turns her back. Smiling to herself\, Uhart reveals the infinite ways we show ourselves to one another. \nA remarkable traveler and observer\, Uhart pays close attention to the way people speak\, how they move\, and how they remain still. Considered to be one of the greatest contemporary Argentine writers\, Uhart won the Manuel Rojas Iberian-American Award for literature in 2017. The Scent of Buenos Aires is the first collection of Uhart’s to be published in English\, and Maureen Shaughnessy’s translation perfectly captures Uhart’s extraordinary world\, one dappled with iridescent ivy and the small epiphanies of ordinary souls.
