SUMMARY:Hanne Ørstavik and Nina MacLaughlin discuss Ti Amo at Brookline Booksmith
DESCRIPTION:Join Hanne Ørstavik and writer Nina MacLaughlin in conversation about Ørstavik’s latest novel\, Ti Amo. Hosted by the Brookline Booksmith\, the event will take place at the bookshop on November 3rd\, at 7pm EST. \nHanne Ørstavik published the novel Cut in 1994 and embarked on a career that would make her one of the most remarkable and admired authors in Norwegian contemporary literature. Her literary breakthrough came three years later with the publication of Love (Kjærlighet)\, which in 2006 was voted the 6th best Norwegian book of the last 25 years in a prestigious contest in Dagbladet\, and won the 2019 PEN Translation Prize. Since then\, the author has written several acclaimed and much discussed novels and received a host of literary prizes. \n  \n  \nNina MacLaughlin is the author of Wake\, Siren: Ovid Resung\, (FSG/FSG Originals)\, as well as Summer Solstice: An Essay (Black Sparrow). Her first book was the acclaimed memoir Hammer Head: The Making of a Carpenter (W.W. Norton). Formerly an editor at the Boston Phoenix\, she worked for nine years as a carpenter\, and is now a books columnist for the Boston Globe. Her work has appeared on or in The Paris Review Daily\, The Virginia Quarterly Review\, n+1\, The Believer\, The New York Times Book Review\, Agni\, American Short Fiction\, the Los Angeles Review of Books\, the Wall Street Journal\, Meatpaper\, and elsewhere. \n  \n \n  \nIn Ti Amo\, an unnamed narrator tends to her husband\, stricken with cancer\, in the final months of his life. She examines the elements of their life together: their Vietnamese rose-colored folding table where they eat their meals\, each of the New Year’s Eves they’ve shared\, their friendships\, and their most intimate exchanges. With everything in flux\, she searches for the facets that will remain. Hanne Ørstavik writes\, “I have a compulsion for truth that feels like my very life force itself.” Tentative\, laced with a tingling frankness\, Ørstavik’s prose adheres so closely to the inner workings of its narrator’s mind as to nearly undo itself. In Martin Aitken’s translation\, Ørstavik’s piercing story sings.

SUMMARY:Scholastique Mukasonga and Mark Polizzotti in celebration of Kibogo
DESCRIPTION:Join the Transnational Literature Series at Brookline Booksmith for an in-store event with Scholastique Mukasonga and translator Mark Polizzotti to celebrate the release of Kibogo. Longlisted for 2022 National Book Award\, it’s a masterwork of satire\, lore\, and living memory from the leading voice of French-Rwandan literature. The conversation will take place on September 29th\, at 7pm ET. You can register here. \nScholastique Mukasonga was born in Rwanda in 1956. She settled in France in 1992\, only two years before the brutal genocide of the Tutsi swept through Rwanda. Her groundbreaking books include: the debut novel Our Lady of the Nile\, Cockroaches (chosen by the New York Times as one of the fifty best memoirs of the last fifty years)\, Igifu\, and National Book Award-nominated The Barefoot Woman\, expertly translated by Jordan Stump. In 2021\, she won the Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Women’s Freedom. \n  \n  \n  \nMark Polizzotti is a biographer\, critic\, translator\, editor\, and poet. In 2016\, he received an Award for Literature from the American Academy of Arts & Letters and was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. His translation of Eric Vuillard’s The War of the Poor was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2021. His own books include Revolution of the Mind: The Life of André Breton\, which was a finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First Nonfiction; Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisited; a monograph on Luis Buñuel’s Los Olvidados; and Sympathy for the Traitor: A Translation Manifesto. He has translated over fifty books from the French\, including works by Patrick Modiano\, Gustave Flaubert\, and Marguerite Duras\, among others. He directs the publications program at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York. \n  \nIn Kibogo\, Mukasonga’s recounts the clash between ancient Rwandan beliefs and the missionaries’ determination to replace them with European Christianity. When a rogue priest is defrocked for fusing the gospels with the martyrdom of Kibogo\, a fierce clash of cults ensues. Swirling with the heady smell of wet earth and flashes of acerbic humor\, Mukasonga brings to life the vital mythologies that imbue the Rwandan spirit. In doing so\, she gives us a tale of disarming simplicity and profound universal truth. \n  \n
