SUMMARY:Roger Mello at the IBBY Regional Conference
DESCRIPTION:Roger Mello and David Wiesner speak to SCBWI members about international competitions. \nRoger Mello has illustrated over 100 titles – 22 of which he also wrote – and his unique style and adroit sense of color continues to push the boundaries of children’s book illustration. Rather than relying on written narrative to tell the story\, Mello invites his young readers to fill the gaps with imagination. Mello has won numerous awards for writing and illustrating\, including three of IBBY’s Luis Jardim Awards\, the Best Children’s Book 2002 International Award\, and the 2014 Hans Christian Andersen Award. \nCharcoal Boys is a poetic and sensitive portrait of a child living under difficult circumstances. Charcoal Boys offers a unique perspective on the life of a young boy working in Brazil’s charcoal mines: that of a wasp who follows the child throughout his day. Through the wasp we observe the hardships the little boy faces\, from his work at the furnaces to his relationships with the other workers. \n  \nThis event is held through the 13th IBBY Regional Conference.
