SUMMARY:Lost City Books 2026 Translation Salon
DESCRIPTION:Chloe Garcia Roberts\, the translator of Lost In Peach Blossom Paradise\, the first book in the series Little Yu and the Treelings by Xiong Liang\, will be in conversation with authors and translators Nancy Naomi Carlson and Alex Brostoff. The conversation will be centered around their experiences translating fiction and poetry\, and the specificities of the source languages they translate from (including Spanish\, Mandarin\, French\, and Portuguese).The Translation Salon will take place on August 4th\, 2026 at The Line Hotel in their Carina Room. There will some wine\, snacks\, mingling and a book signing! \nChloe Garcia Roberts is a poet and translator from the Spanish and Chinese. She is the author of The Reveal\, which was published as part of Noemi Press’s Akrilika Series for innovative Latino writing and Fire Eater: A Translator’s Theology which was a finalist for CLMP’s Firecracker Award in creative nonfiction and the New Mexico Book Awards in poetry and nonfiction. \nNancy Naomi Carlson is a recipient of two translation grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and decorated by the French government with the Academic Palms. She is the translations editor for On The Seawall\, the co-translations editor for Pleiades\, and is co-chair of PEN America’s Translation Committee. \nAlex Brostoff is a scholar\, writer\, and translator. They are co-editor of the collection Autotheories (The MIT Press\, 2025) and have guest edited special journal issues on autotheory (2021) and trans literatures (2025). Brostoff’s first book\, a critical reframing of autotheory\, is forthcoming with Columbia University Press. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Yvette Neisser. \nYvette Neisser is an award-winning poet\, Spanish translator\, and founder of the DC-Area Literary Translators Network (DC-ALT). Her co-translation of Venezuelan poet Maria Teresa Ogliastri’s From the Diary of Madame Mao won the 2025 Carnegie Mellon University Press Translation Prize and will be published in Fall 2026. \nNote: The Line has an accessible entrance at 2468 Champlain St NW. SUMMARY:Lost City Books Translation Salon
DESCRIPTION:Jacob Rogers\, Ena Selimović\, Soleil Davíd\, and Kurt Beals are all accomplished writers who work as professional literary translators. We’ll get to hear them talk about their experiences in the field and delve into the challenges and nuances of translating fiction\, as well as the specificities of the source languages they translate from (including Galician\, Filipino\, Croatian\, and German). We’ll have some wine\, snacks\, mingling and book signing at the end. The panel will be moderated by Lost City Bookstore owner Adam Waterreus. \nThis event will take place at The Line hotel\, around the corner from Lost City Books. \nJacob Rogers is a translator from Galician and Spanish. He has won grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the PEN/Heim Translation fund\, and co-edited features of Galician literature for Words Without Borders\, Asymptote\, and The Riveter. His translation of Manuel Rivas’ The Last Days of Terranova was published by Archipelago Books in November 2022\, and his translation of Berta Dávila’s The Dear Ones from 3TimesRebel Press in June 2023. He has translations forthcoming with Sublunary Editions and Lost River Press. \nEna Selimović is a Yugoslav-American writer and translator. She co-founded Turkoslavia\, a translation collective and journal. Her work has appeared in Words Without Borders\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, World Literature Today\, and The Paris Review\, among others\, and has received support from the American Literary Translators Association\, the American Council of Learned Societies\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Washington University in St. Louis. \nSoleil Davíd is a poet and translator from the Philippines and is the author of the chapbook Equatorial(Aklat Ulagad\, 2024). Her honors include grants and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ and Translators’ Conferences\, PEN America\, Barbara Deming Fund\, and the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. She received a BA with high distinction from the University of California at Berkeley and an MFA from Indiana University Bloomington. She is a senior editor for translation at The Margins. \nKurt Beals is visiting associate professor of German and Humanities Fellow in literary translation at the University of Richmond. He has translated works by Jenny Erpenbeck\, Hermann Hesse\, Reiner Stach\, Regina Ullmann\, and Anja Utler\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Lost City Books + The Line DC welcome you to attend their Fall Salon\, the third installment in a new\, quarterly reading series featuring both local and visiting authors. \nJoin them for a celebration of the city’s vibrant literary community\, hosted inside the historic cornerstone building at the heart of Adams Morgan\, The Line hotel. \n  \nThe authors: \nHanne Ørstavik\, one of the most admired and prominent writers in contemporary Norwegian fiction\, published her first novel\, Cut\, in 1994. She has since been translated into more than 16 languages. Martin Aitken’s translation of Love was a 2018 National Book Award finalist and won the 2019 PEN Translation Prize. Celebrated novels The Pastor and Ti Amo have also appeared with Archipelago Books. \nKim Addonizio is the author of over a dozen books of poetry and prose. Her memoir-in-essays\, Bukowski in a Sundress\, was published by Penguin. Exit Opera (poems) is just out from W.W. Norton. Her work has been honored with fellowships from the NEA and Guggenheim Foundation\, and her work has been translated into several languages. Her collection Tell Me was a finalist for the National Book Award. She lives in Oakland\, CA and teaches poetry workshops on Zoom. \nKat Chow is a reporter and writer\, and the author of Seeing Ghosts: A Memoir (Grand Central Publishing)\, named a Notable Book by The New York Times. She was a reporter at NPR\, where she was a founding member of the Code Switch team and podcast. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine\, The Atlantic\, and The Paris Review\, among others. She’s a contributor to Pop Culture Happy Hour and Slate’s Culture Gabfest and has received residency fellowships from Storyknife\, Millay Arts and the Jack Jones Literary Arts Retreat. She is currently George Washington University’s Jenny McKean Moore Writer-In-Washington. \n  \nThe event will be held on the Mezzanine inside The Line hotel. \n(If you enter through the Euclid Street entrance\, the stairs to the mezzanine will be immediately on your right.
