SUMMARY:Lucas Adams and Álvaro Enrigue on Quino's Mafalda
DESCRIPTION:On June 20th\, we’ll gather at McNally Jackson Seaport to celebrate the release of Quino’s legendary Argentine comic\, Mafalda. Lucas Adams and Álvaro Enrigue will join forces to discuss Frank Wynne’s vivifying translation and Mafalda‘s sensational impact in Latin America and beyond. Enrigue says that he “understands the world\, still\, through the eyes of Mafalda”—there’s no better pair to help us bring Mafalda to English readers. This event will begin at 6:30pm\, we hope to see you! \nLucas Adams is the editor of New York Review Comics\, an imprint of New York Review Books. His cartoons\, illustrations\, and writing have appeared in The New York Review of Books\, The New Yorker\, The Paris Review Online\, and elsewhere. He lives with his family in Sunnyside\, New York. \nÁlvaro Enrigue was a Cullman Center Fellow and a Fellow at the Princeton University Program in Latin American Studies. He has taught at New York University\, Princeton University\, the University of Maryland\, and Columbia University. His work has appeared in The New York Times\, The Believer\, The White Review\, n+1\, London Review of Books\, El País\, among others. Enrigue was born in Mexico and lives in New York City. \nQuino was an Argentine cartoonist whose beloved Mafalda comic strips were first published in 1964 and ran until 1973. Quino created the utterly original\, inquisitive\, intelligent\, ironic\, non-conformist Mafalda\, whose greatest concerns are peace and human rights (one day\, she plans to be a UN ambassador). The stories of his rebellious character have been translated into twenty-six languages and published in newspapers and magazines worldwide. Quino’s awards include the Cartoonist of the Year Award at the International Salon of Montreal (1982)\, two Konex Platinum Awards for Visual Arts-Graphic Humour (1982 and 1992)\, the Quevedos Latin American Prize for Graphic Humour (2000)\, and the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities (2014). Life-size statues of Mafalda dot park benches and gardens throughout Latin America.

SUMMARY:These Beloved Faces: Daughters on Mothers\, A View from India
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Women’s History Month\, Asia Society presents an evening of poetry\, memoir\, dance and conversation\, bringing together artistic\, personal and global stories of womanhood. Join us for an intimate discussion of the mother-daughter relationship with writer\, actress and child-rights advocate\, Nandana Dev Sen\, and author\, art historian and Asia Society President Emerita\, Vishakha Desai — with interpretations in movement by choreographer and dancer\, Preeti Vasudevan. This unique program will weave together language and legacies\, poems and performance\, creating a vibrant\, multi-sensory palette that presents the many shades of motherhood (and daughterhood). \nInspired by the poetry of one of Bengal’s most beloved writers\, Nabaneeta Dev Sen (translated by her daughter\, Nandana)\, this special program will feature bilingual poetry readings\, original dance compositions\, and a wide-ranging conversation touching on love\, rebellion\, marriage\, motherhood\, and migration. Vishakha and Nandana will explore the creative process of writing\, the challenges of translation\, and that sparkle we inherit from our mothers. They will be joined on stage by Preeti\, who will share\, through performance\, her own interpretations of Nabaneeta’s extraordinary poetry. \nNandana Sen and Vishakha Desai have both published highly acclaimed books with a focus on their mothers\, which will be available for purchase and personalization at the event: \nAcrobat is a radiant collection of poetry about womanhood\, intimacy\, and the body politic that together evokes the arc of an ordinary life\, both picking apart and celebrating the rituals that make us human. Translated with lightness and lyricism by Dev Sen’s daughter Nandana\, an award-winning poet herself\, Acrobat is at once compassionate and unsparing\, conversational and symphonic. In Gloria Steinem’s words\, “Acrobat will rescue us\, and be loved around the world.” \nVividly conjuring the complexities and exhilaration of a life rooted in multiple places\, World as Family is an award-winning memoir by Vishakha Desai. Through her personal story of growing up in a Gandhian family in India and her subsequent career as a dancer\, curator\, teacher\, and institutional leader in America\, she reframes the idea of being global with multi-rooted local and national belongings.

SUMMARY:Hanne Ørstavik presents 'Ti Amo'
DESCRIPTION:Third Place Books is thrilled to welcome Hanne Ørstavik to their Ravenna neighborhood store! Ørstavik is the author of three novels translated into English by Martin Aitken—Love\, The Pastor\, and Ti Amo—and the forthcoming publication of stay with me from Archipelago Books. Ørstavik was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2018. Ti Amo is her most recent book translated into English. \nFor important updates\, registration is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! \nWhat can be found within a gaze? What lies inside a painting or behind a handful of repeated words? These are the questions that haunt our unnamed narrator as she tends to her husband\, stricken with cancer\, in the final months of his life. She examines the elements of their life together: their Vietnamese rose-colored folding table where they eat their meals\, each of the New Year’s Eves they’ve shared\, their friendships\, and their most intimate exchanges. With everything in flux\, she searches for the facets that will remain. Hanne Ørstavik writes\, “I have a compulsion for truth that feels like my very life force itself.” Tentative\, laced with a tingling frankness\, Ørstavik’s prose adheres so closely to the inner workings of its narrator’s mind as to nearly undo itself. In Martin Aitken’s translation\, Ørstavik’s piercing story sings. \n
