SUMMARY:Roger Mello at the IBBY Regional Conference
DESCRIPTION:Roger Mello leads a book discussion group dedicated to his latest publication\, Charcoal Boys. Beginning at 12:15\, Roger will be available for autographs. \nRoger Mello has illustrated over 100 titles – 22 of which he also wrote – and his unique style and adroit sense of color continues to push the boundaries of children’s book illustration. Rather than relying on written narrative to tell the story\, Mello invites his young readers to fill the gaps with imagination. Mello has won numerous awards for writing and illustrating\, including three of IBBY’s Luis Jardim Awards\, the Best Children’s Book 2002 International Award\, and the 2014 Hans Christian Andersen Award. \nCharcoal Boys is a poetic and sensitive portrait of a child living under difficult circumstances. Charcoal Boys offers a unique perspective on the life of a young boy working in Brazil’s charcoal mines: that of a wasp who follows the child throughout his day. Through the wasp we observe the hardships the little boy faces\, from his work at the furnaces to his relationships with the other workers. \n  \nThis event is held through the 13th IBBY Regional Conference. SUMMARY:Maureen Shaughnessy at Word Up Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Maureen Shaughnessy discusses her latest translation\, The Scent of Buenos Aires by Hebe Uhart. \n  \nMaureen Shaughnessy’s translations have been published by World Literature Today\, Words Without Borders\, Asymptote and The Antioch Review. Her translation of Hebe Uhart’s selected stories\, The Scent of Buenos Aires\, is forthcoming from Archipelago Books in October 2019. She lives in Bariloche\, Argentina. \nHebe Uhart’s stories sneak up on you. Refreshingly approachable\, they are punctuated by street talk and saturated with a cryptic wit that recalls Lydia Davis. In The Scent of Buenos Aires\, Uhart renders moments at the zoo\, the hair salon\, or a homeowners association meeting with delightfully eccentric insight. These stories cast an unusual\, intimate light on the inner lives of plants\, animals\, and humans\, magnifying the minute\, everyday quirks of Argentina’s small towns: a cat curls around his owner to humor him\, a classroom of children sway like trees when their teacher turns her back. Smiling to herself\, Uhart reveals the infinite ways we show ourselves to one another. \nA remarkable traveler and observer\, Uhart pays close attention to the way people speak\, how they move\, and how they remain still. Considered to be one of the greatest contemporary Argentine writers\, Uhart won the Manuel Rojas Iberian-American Award for literature in 2017. The Scent of Buenos Aires is the first collection of Uhart’s to be published in English\, and Maureen Shaughnessy’s translation perfectly captures Uhart’s extraordinary world\, one dappled with iridescent ivy and the small epiphanies of ordinary souls.

SUMMARY:Maureen Shaughnessy at Annie Bloom's Books
DESCRIPTION:Maureen Shaughnessy discusses her latest translation\, Hebe Uhart‘s The Scent of Buenos Aires.

SUMMARY:Ambai at Another Story Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading and discussion with Ambai at Another Story Bookshop in Toronto. \nC.S. Lakshmi\, writing under the pseudonym of Ambai\, is a feminist Tamil writer. She was born in 1944 in Tamil Nadu\, and grew up in Bangalore and Mumbai. She received her PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her publications include In a Forest\, A Deer\, Fish in a Dwindling Lake\, A Meeting on the Andheri Overbridge\, The Purple Sea\, and A Night with a Black Spider and articles in newspapers such as The Hindu\, The Times of India\, and Political Weekly. Her short stories portray the reality of the lives of women\, communicating their silence through words. She has worked in research projects such as:The Face Behind the Mask: Women in Tamil Literature.  In 1988\, Lakshmi founded SPARROW (Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women) a non-governmental organization for documenting and archiving the work of female writers and artists. She is currently a member of the University of Michigan’s Global Feminisms Project. \n\nA Kitchen in the Corner of the House collects twenty-five gem-like stories from the innovative and perceptive Tamil writer Ambai. \nAmbai’s narrators are daring and courageous\, stretching and reinventing their homes\, marriages\, and worlds. With each story\, her expansive voice confronts the construction of gender in Tamil literature. Piecing together letters\, journal entries\, and notes\, Ambai weaves themes of both self-liberation and confinement into her writing. Her transfixing stories often meditate on motherhood\, sexuality\, and the liberating\, in turn inhibiting\, contours of the body. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn one story\, a young girl is frozen in terror\, waiting to tell mother that she’s just gotten her period. She thinks\, “I need my mother. My heart yearns for her…” Fueled by such longing\, each of Ambai’s characters seek a freer form of language and expression in Tamil. In another\, a yellow fish flits into the ocean with an arrogant snort – at one moment on the brink of death and in the next\, freely merging with the ocean’s blue-grey depths.

DESCRIPTION:Breaking Out: Women and Girls on Their Own Terms \nMona Eltahawy (The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls)\, Tamil writer Ambai (A Kitchen in the Corner of the House)\, and Téa Obreht (Inland) bring to life strong female voices of the past and present. From Eltahaway’s powerful #MeToo manifesto to Obreht’s reimagining the American West with a tale of an unflinching frontierswoman to Ambai’s courageous characters grappling with motherhood\, self-assertion and sexuality – all three writers address issues of confinement and liberation in the face of larger cultural and historical forces. \nModerated by Rivka Galchen \n  \nC.S. SUMMARY:Scholastique Mukasonga at the Brooklyn Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:Looking Back: Memoir\, Auto-Fiction and the Worlds that Shape Us \nWith Scholastique Mukasonga\, Aleksandar Hemon\, and Amit Chaudhuri. Moderated by Amitava Kumar. \nBorn in Rwanda in 1956\, Scholastique Mukasonga experienced from childhood the violence and humiliation of the ethnic conflicts that shook her country. In 1960\, her family was displaced to the polluted and under-developed Bugesera district of Rwanda. Mukasonga was later forced to leave the school of social work in Butare and flee to Burundi. She settled in France in 1992\, only two years before the brutal genocide of the Tutsi swept through Rwanda. In the aftermath\, Mukasonga learned that 27 of her family members had been massacred. Twelve years later\, Gallimard published her autobiographical account Inyenzi ou les Cafards\, which marked Mukasonga’s entry into literature. This was followed by the publication of La femme aux pieds nus in 2008 and L’Iguifou in 2010\, both widely praised. Her first novel\, Notre-Dame du Nil\, won the Ahmadou Kourouma prize and the Renaudot prize in 2012\, as well as the 2013 Océans France Ô prize\, and the 2014 French Voices Award\, and was shortlisted for the 2016 International Dublin Literary award.

The novel’s translator Peter Wortsman will be joined in conversation by Austrian literary scholar Kathrin Holzermeyr-Rosenfield\, who translated the original text into Portuguese\, and Fatima Naqvi\, literary scholar and professor of German and Film Studies at Rutgers University. Writer and translator Tess Lewis will be moderating. \nFirst published in 1911\, Intimate Ties is Robert Musil’s second book\, consisting of two novellas\, “The Culmination of Love” and “The Temptation of Silent Veronica.” Each revolves around a troubled woman in the throes of her sexual and romantic woes\, as their memories of the past return to influence their present desires. Musil tracks the psyche of his protagonists in a blurring of impressions that is reflected in his experimental prose. Intimate Ties offers the reader an early glimpse of the high modernist style Musil would perfect in his magnum opus The Man Without Qualities.

SUMMARY:Hopscotch Translation Series: Modern Greek literature with Karen Emmerich & Jacob Moe
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for PENN’s 5th installment of their Hopscotch Translation Series\, featuring KAREN EMMERICH\, reading from her translation of Christos Ikonomou’s Good Will Come From the Sea and JACOB MOE\, reading from his translation of Maria Mitsora’s On My Aunt’s Shallow Grave White Roses Have Already Bloomed. A discussion between the authors will be moderated by MIKA TSEKOURA\, Lecturer of Modern Greek at the Penn Language Center. \nChristos Ikonomou’s collection Good Will Come From the Sea is a dirge for the Greek economic crisis and the devastation it has wrought\, a profound meditation on the nature of justice in an unjust world. On an unnamed island\, struggling migrants and trapped locals endure the crushing weight of poverty in these four linked stories. As the characters mourn their livelihoods\, loved ones\, and dreams\, only ghostly threads of hope keep them marching toward a future that shows little promise of change. Good Will Come From the Sea is a tender and defiant song of loss\, a study of poverty’s toll on the human soul. \nMaria Mitsora’s collection of short stories moves across the urban netherworld of Athens to imagined Latin American towns and science-fiction dystopias. Mitsora animates the alternatingly dark and revelatory aspects of the human psyche\, depicting a world in which her protagonists are caught between reality and myth\, predestination and chance\, rationality and twisted dreams.
