SUMMARY:A Film Screening Curated by Claude Ponti
DESCRIPTION:Come to L’Alliance New York for a free screening of France’s first drawn animated feature in color\, The King and the Mockingbird\, preceded by a short video introduction by Claude Ponti. Ponti\, the renowned French children’s book author who curated this screening\, cites the film as a major influence on his work. His picture books\, published in English by Elsewhere Editions\, will be available for sale and perusal. \nThe King and the Mockingbird\, a collaboration between animator Paul Grimault and writer Jacques Prévert\, creates a surreal world where fairy-tale castles and labyrinthine passageways give way to stark industrial landscapes with unexpected mechanical inventions. Alan Scherstuhl of The Village Voice has described the film as “the most swooning and elegant hand-drawn animation masterpiece to climax with a giant robot attack.”

SUMMARY:NYPL Heritage Book Club: Cécé by Emmelie Prophète
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin staff at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library for a book discussion of Cécé by Emmelie Prophète\, translated from the French by Aidan Rooney. \nThis is a virtual event. You must register here with your email address in order to receive the link to participate. The link will be sent to you by email approximately one day before the program. \nCécé\, née Célia Jérôme\, lives in the Cité of Divine Power\, a neighborhood warped by gang life in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. Here she has witnessed the deaths of her mother and grandmother; here she takes care of her bedridden Uncle Frédo. At night in the Cité\, she hears gunfire—the ever-present sound of men disputing their territory—alongside radios on full volume\, vendors selling their wares\, children fighting and playing. Caught up in “the race to exist\,” Cécé buys herself a smartphone and adopts the social media moniker Cécé La Flamme\, amassing a following by posting images of her surroundings: her lunch\, gullies\, and stark images of dead bodies on the street. For Cécé\, these document her movements in the Cité; for her followers\, they are glimpses of a world wholly other than their own\, brutal but compulsive viewing. Cécé is a portrait of a young woman desperate to lay claim to her experience. It is a searing account of the commodification of violence in the age of social media\, of community and survival\, of human connection.

SUMMARY:An evening with Patrizio Ceccagnoli & Megan Kaminski
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Raven Book Store on April 28th for an evening with Patrizio Ceccagnoli\, co-translator of Milo De Angelis’ Last Stops of the Night Journey\, and poet Megan Kaminski. The two will honor and read from De Angelis’ glimmering collection that speaks to his experiences teaching poetry at a prison outside Milan. We so hope you can make it. \n“Here are a series of recollections that approach each memory and experience with a philosophical flair that is monumental in its emotional conveyance. There’s a sepia-toned quality to De Angelis’ poetry (beautifully translated here by Ceccagnoli and Stewart) that is both artistically mindful but also timeless: interactions and dialogues with old friends\, reflections on past experiences and ruminations on mortality\, transience and beauty all take center stage and impress upon the reader an almost allegorical approach\, as if there is a lesson to be learned by interacting with each poem. Spellbinding and funereal\, this book has the unique ability to make you feel its loneliness\, but also somehow enjoy it at the same time.” —Trevor Ruth\, Changing Hands\, Tempe\, Arizona

SUMMARY:Salt\, Stone and Stars: Celebrating the Timeless Pastoral
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in an afternoon of words and image to celebrate the deep resonance between two pastoral works separated by nearly a century but joined by the timeless rhythms of shepherding\, and both connected to Vermont. Helen Whybrow will read from her memoir\, The Salt Stones: Seasons of a Shepherd’s Life (Milkweed Editions\, 2025)\, and Jody Gladding will read from her translation of Jean Giono’s novel\, The Serpent of Stars (Archipelago Books\, 2026). \nThe connection between these books is personal and profound; Whybrow first discovered Jean Giono’s 1933 novel in a local bookstore years ago\, and found in its description of Provençal shepherds an initiation into the rich narrative traditions of the pastoral life. Her memoir\, The Salt Stones\, traces her journey into becoming a shepherd at Knoll Farm in Fayston\, Vermont and\, throughout\, The Serpent of Stars serves as her muse. The Salt Stones was longlisted for the National Book Award and named a New Yorker Best Book of 2025. Jody Gladding\, an acclaimed poet\, and translator of over 30 books\, lives in East Calais. Her beautiful translation of Giono’s The Serpent of Stars is being reissued in February 2026.

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Launch of Jean Giono’s The Serpent of Stars and the publication of Jean Follain’s Earthly
DESCRIPTION:Join Archipelago Books and The Song Cave in celebrating the reprint of Jean Giono’s The Serpent of Stars and the publication of Jean Follain’s Earthly. Both Giono and Follain were writers from rural France who came of age during WWI. As the agrarian lifestyle they were raised in was forever altered by the twin forces of WWII and industrialization\, they used writing to engage with these century-defining dynamics. Follain refers to the “uncertainty at the root of time” and observes plainly in one of his poems: “There are almost no more horses.” Giono renders the disorientation of the times with a paradox: “When mysteries are very crafty\, they hide in the light; shadows are merely a decoy.” The event will feature readings from the two books by Andrew Seguin and Mark Polizzotti\, as well as a conversation between Edwin Frank and Michael Wood.

SUMMARY:Italian Cultural Institute in New York Book Club: One\, None\, and a Hundred Grand by Luigi Pirandello
DESCRIPTION:Special guest: Sean Wilsey\, translator of the newest edition of One\, None\, and a Hundred Grand. \nLuigi Pirandello’s final novel (published 1926)\, explores the fragmented nature of identity through main character\, Vitangelo Moscarda\, who suddenly realizes he is perceived as a different person by everyone he knows. This recognition leads him to question his own self and ultimately he seeks to dissolve his identity entirely. The story begins with a seemingly minor comment from his wife about his nose\, triggering a crisis that reveals the gap between his self-perception and the “hundred thousand” versions of him that exist in others’ minds\, making him “no one” in his own quest for a unified self. It’s a key work of modernism\, delving into themes of perception\, reality\, and the self. \nMarisa Castagno and Emanuele Capoano will be our guides throughout this journey. \nWhen purchasing directly from the publisher\, archipelagobooks.org\, IIC Book Club members receive a 40% discount on the cost of the book by using PIRANDELLO40 coupon code at check-out.

SUMMARY:Wickerwork: A Poetry-in-Translation Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Princeton’s German Department for a conversation with Wickerwork’s author Christian Lehnert\, winner of the Hölderlin Prize 2025\, and translator Richard Sieburth. This event brings the two together for a fruitful exchange between poet and translator and thereby promises to be an especially stimulating opportunity for participants to gain rare insights into the craft of lyric poetry and its move into another verbal and cultural idiom. The dialogue will be centered on the poetry of Christian Lehnert and its recent series of English translations by Richard Sieburth. The event will be the first time Lehnert has appeared in the United States. \n  \nFor more information on this event\, please visit Princeton’s German Department website by clicking on the link here.
