SUMMARY:Ellen Elias-Bursać & Jim Hicks at Brookline Booksmith
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, November 6th\, at 7pm\, Ellen Elias-Bursać will join Jim Hicks at Brookline Booksmith to discuss Miljenko Jergović’s Inshallah\, Madonna\, Inshallah\, co-translated by Elias-Bursać and Mirza Purić. In the nineteen stories that comprise Inshallah\, Jergovic weaves a collective ethnography that both critiques the imperial domination that has marked the Balkan region for centuries\, and to display\, carefully and tenderly\, the lives of individuals\, Christian and Muslim. \nThis event is part of the Transnational Literature Series\, readings that focus on stories of migration and the intersecting threads of politics and literature. There will be a signing after the reading. RSVP for free here. \n\n

SUMMARY:Archipelago's first book club
DESCRIPTION:Archipelago Books and Barbès are starting a book club!  \nJoin the editors for drinks and discussion at Barbès. Our pick for November is Sevgi Soysal’s Walking\, a novel first published in 1970 and translated from Turkish by Maureen Freely.  \nSoysal was a major figure in Turkey in the 60s and 70s\, a committed socialist opposing the military dictatorship and a novelist and short story writer. At Walking’s heart are two young people\, Elâ and Memet\, each trapped by forms they did not choose for themselves. Fury seems to power the novel\, but this fury expands into a larger attention and delicacy. Soysal writes about the earth as much as the society that surrounds her characters. It’s a beautiful and complex book\, rife for discussion. Books are available for purchase here\, and at Barbès a couple weeks ahead of our meeting.  \nAfter the discussion\, there will be an oud performance by Julie Dodge.

SUMMARY:Yasmeen Hanoosh & Lydia Kiesling at Powell's
DESCRIPTION:Portland friends: join us for a conversation around Elias Khoury’s first novel\, On the Relations of the Circle\, with translator Yasmeen Hanoosh and Lydia Kiesling. This rreading\, discussion\, and signing will take place at the wonderful Powell’s City of Books. 7pm! \n“Despite Elias Khoury’s known wizardry as one of the great contemporary narrators\, his referential bedrock can always be found in the full corpus of Arabic poetry\, texts he knew intimately. Yasmeen Hanoosh’s utterly lucid rendering of his first novel finally squares the circle of Khoury’s magnificent achievement. Deeply enmeshed in his own language and culture\, he embraced the world fully\, with all its pain\, suffering\, and wonder\, while never ceasing to demonstrate that true human dignity emerges from active resistance to all forms of oppression.” — Ammiel Alcalay
